Finally, a Refuge from the Chaos

After eight months of living in this house, we slept in our master bedroom for the first time last night. We now have a private bathroom attached and a wall of closets. It feels so sweet because this was a long time coming.

Before:

_masterbr1 — The walls and ceilings are cracked. There is water damage and the large window is held together with duct tape.

This bedroom needed a lot of work. The walls and ceiling plaster were filled with cracks. The largest window was broken and repaired with duct tape. (That repair didn’t last, check out my Topsy Turvy blog to see what happened.)

Bedroom 4 — September: Boxes of clothes and toiletries in the bedroom.

The bedroom was the scene of chaos for months. When we moved in, we filled the bedroom with clothes and bathroom boxes and we used the two closets briefly. I shared this photo back in September in Dust, Dirt and Destruction, Oh My! (I still can’t believe I shared that blog!)

Master Bedroom — October: Trim and doors are stored in the bedroom.

We needed to clear the boxes out once the work began. First the room was used a storage for trim and doors as they were removed for the demolition process. The plaster repair also began.

In November, the work on the closets began and things were shifted around in this bedroom again. As you can see, the broken window need to be boarded up.

As late as December, the room was still a mess. We managed to work around it to repair the walls and ceiling and finish the closet.

This bedroom originally had two separate closets but they didn’t provide enough storage for our needs. We couldn’t figure out a way to create a walk-in closet, so we took closet space from another bedroom to make an entire wall of closets. We moved the door of the other closet to the hallway and this became our linen closet.

We needed a new support beam.

Remember all of those doors we stored? We had enough extra doors to make the new French doors into our closet. We used Closets by Design to install the drawers and shelving. After months of pulling clothes out of boxes, it will feel great to put them away properly.

Once our contractor finished the master bathroom and bedroom, David got to work painting–Sherwin Williams’ Greek Villa on the trim, Benjamin Moore’s Chelsea Gray on the walls. There are still some projects to complete, but finally, the room has become a refuge from the chaos.
