It’s been ten long months, but the porch is finished! And, after three years, we are done with the house renovation! All that remains is final landscaping.
Once again, I’ll let the images tell you the story of the last two months of porch construction. If you keep reading to the end, you’ll see the bigger picture.
The Floor
We chose mahogany for the porch floor after considering other hardwoods and manmade materials. We love the look and it’s long-lasting.
The stairs are made of the same material. In order to meet current codes and not require a handrail, we had to limit the height of the stairs.
The Ceiling
The original porch ceiling structure was kept but most of the ceiling is new.
The three sides of the wrap-around porch–that’s a lot of ceiling!
Once the ceiling was in place, David took on the huge painting job. We used a traditional “haint” blue.
The Upper Deck
The deck was recreated based on the original in a 1910 photo.
Darrin built the deck railing to keep the historic style.
The Finishing Touches
The final construction project was the custom-built roof trim to match the rest of the house. Darrin cut 45 individual pieces to trim the porch curve.
David finished the project by painting all of the columns and trim.
And here is the result! We are stunned by how different the house looks and how huge the porch is. We can’t wait to furnish it and hang out on it this summer.
I am in AWE! Congrats on your finished portico! Mahogany – Wow!! Gorgeous. Dynamic Design Duo — possible name of your new show. And I’m nominating David for the Hot Craftsmen calendar.😉 What a hard-working talented dear. Btw, I really like the color of your shutters too. Sooo many critical decisions to make everything come together in the end. And darn it, you make it look easy.
I’m so glad to see the old house restored so beautifully! After so many decades of neglect, you’ve come in and done an amazing transformation inside and out! Just gorgeous!
